Strategy for Playing Deuces Wild
Let's start out with simple deuces wild strategies and branch out from there. The most basic of strategies as far as which cards to keep and which to discard is this: if you do not already have a completed hand once you receive your cards, keep any deuce or keep any pair in your hand and discard the other cards.
In general, you will not want to keep a high card like you would in Jacks or better. This is because you need to get at least a three of a kind in order to win anything. Two pairs or lower do you no good.
Deuces Wild Advanced Strategy
These are the important things to remember:
- Any completed or pat hand should
always be kept. This exceptions to
this rule is if you have more than 2
deuces (at least a four of a kind
minimum) or if you are 1 card away
from a straight flush or higher.
- Any deuce is always kept. A pair should usually be kept unless you have a legitimate shot at completing a straight or higher.
The next portion is important, this is what you should do if you don't have any deuces or pairs in your hand.
You are going to discard all 5 cards unless you have one of the remaining scenarios
(in order of importance):
- Keep 3 cards to a Royal Flush
- Keep 4 cards to a flush draw
- Keep 4 cards to an outside straight draw
- Keep 3 cards to a straight flush
- Keep 4 cards to an inside straight
- Keep 2 cards to Royal Flush
If you have one deuce in your hand, you will discard the other four cards unless you have one of the following scenarios:
- Keep 4 cards to a Royal Flush
- Keep 4 to a straight flush if you have 3 natural connectors
- Keep any three of a kind
- Any other combination of 4 to a straight flush
- Keep 3 to a Royal Flush
- Keep 3 to a straight flush if the other two cards are connectors
If you have two deuces in your hand, you will discard the other three cards unless you have one of the following scenarios:
- Keep any pat 4 of a kind or higher
- Keep 4 to a Royal Flush
- Keep 4 cards to a straight flush if the other two cards are connectors
If you have three deuces in your hand, you will discard the other two cards unless you already have a pat straight flush or better.

This is the best example of a very
borderline call that I could come up
with. This is because the hand is
already a straight and discarding
the 5 is risky as I might only win
half of what I should.
In the strategy above, it says to only hold 4 to a straight flush if the two cards are connected. In this example, they are not. But you can still receive another deuce or a 4, 5, or 7 of hearts for the straight flush, any other heart for the flush, any other 4, 5 or 7 for a straight, or a 3 or 6 for a four of a kind. This is 24 cards out of the 47 left over, which means I have a 2 to 1 shot of at least getting a straight again. (The card ended up being another 3 for the four of a kind)
In these kind of scenarios, you can either go with the strategy guide above or go with your gut. But, you won't see something this unique very often.
Deuces Wild Statistics and Odds
First, lets bust out some simple Deuces Wild statistics for you:
- You should receive a deuce in
your starting hand every 2.6 hands
(1 in 13 cards). If you do not
receive a deuce in your starting
hand, you will have about a 1 in 2
chance of getting a deuce if you
dump all five cards.
- You have about a 42% chance
of receiving a pair (no deuce) before you
draw cards. This means you have
about a 15% chance of getting
a pair and a deuce before the
draw, or about 1 in every 6.5
hands.
- You will have about a 1 in
120 chance of getting a pair of
Deuces if you discard all five
cards
- You have about a 1 in 4
chance of getting a deuce when
you are holding onto a pair. The
chance that you will get the
third card to the pair is about
1 in 8 hands. This means that
you will get a 3 of a kind 37.5%
of the time when you hold onto a
pair (a little better than 1 in
3)
-
You have about a 1 in 25 chance
of being dealt two pairs without
a deuce.
If you receive two pairs in your hand, you will have about a 1 in 7 chance of getting a full house either by receiving a deuce of by completing it naturally. Your odds of getting a three of a kind if you dump one of the pairs is better than 1 in 3. Go ahead and decide what you want to do in these circumstances.
